Before Embargo halted the export of goods from Haiti to the United States, Albert Einstein had a thriving business selling his exquisite wooden serving pieces to high end retailers like Neimann Marcus, but during the Haitian embargo, his business languished. Today Einstein is again making his beautiful serving bowls from fast working obeechi wood. So that he does not bite the hand that feeds him, Einstein has had since 1990 a cut and replant program for the tree species he uses. Einstein wants to ensure that while he is making a living from his native land he also leaves new trees for his use and that of future generations. The carving and construction of the bowls is done by men and the hand finishing primarily by women. Each piece is finished in a 14 step process that includes hand rubbing at every step. Truly works of art, these pieces are water, alcohol and dishwater proof. With the help of the Fair Trade network, it has helped give more stability to his small enterprise by exposing his products to the international market. With only a few products showing at the January show 2002, New York International gift fair, Einstein's wooden creations were Aid to Artisans most popular product. Neiman Marcus is again Einstein's customer and Aid to Artisans continues to expose Einstein's products to the international market. As he recently wrote to Aid to Artisans: "I would like to thank your organization for everything you have done for our group of 150 artisans. We are now working with enough motivation to produce the best quality at the best price, and deliver on time." Check out our Einstein Originals product selection.
