Archaeologist turned entrepreneur Jill Ervais founded Desert Designs in 1996. In 1980, Jill visited Egypt and saw the great pyramids and tombs for the first time. It was a case of instant love for Egypt and the Egyptian people. That love led her to embark on her life long passion for archaeology. Upon Jill's completion of a degree in archaeology, she began her graduate studies in Egyptology. In order to fund archaeological expeditions, Jill began bringing products from Israel and Egypt back to the States to sell to museum shops and galleries. As she became close friends with many struggling artists and craftspeople, her desire to help the modern day Egyptian earn a fare wage has turned Jill's part time endeavors into a full time business. All the products offered by Desert Designs are made in workshops that provide a safe work environment for their employees and pay a fair wage.

Launched in 1998 by Janice Masound, Under the Nile was created with the vision of bringing organic baby clothing into the mainstream. All products are created from 100% handpicked organic cotton and carry the USDA Organic seal, ensuring that no pesticides or chemicals are used throughout the entire production process. Additionally, Under the Nile's dyeing process uses metal-free or vegetable dyes, and all accessories such as buttons and zippers are made from organically friendly elements such as wood, shell or nickel-free metals.
Under the Nile partners with the Sekem Initiative Farms in Egypt, a model community for biodynamic agriculture, to source their organic cotton. Under the Nile exemplifies Fair Trade principles, practicing fairness towards all those involved in the entire production chain. A fair price is paid to all workers, from cotton growers to weavers. During the past ten years, the Under the Nile brand has come to symbolize the best of the organic movement: A care for others, a care for the environment and a care for company success, all acting in harmony.
